Victory Run  Hudson Soft1987Strap on this red turbo-charged beauty and punch it! Barrel through the streets of nighttime Paris. Lean into the rolling countryside curves. Sweat the hot Sahara straightaway. The famous Paris to Dakar Road Rally tests driving skills, reaction time and your knowledge of the needs of your machine in various conditions. Great sights! Great sounds! If you've got the skills - hit the road, Jack! The best time wins!***

[1]***The first racing game for the PC-Engine about the famous rally Paris-Dakar. Interesting about this game was that you had to choose spare parts at the beginning of the game to use after each stage. Graphically it is O.K. for a game from 1987. My main complaint is that the control isn't the best and that you often crash because you can't break in time to prevent jumping into the scenery. But once you know how to handle this the game becomes playable.

Moto Roader  NCS Masaya1989A top-down view racing game. The game has 8 tracks. After each heat you earn money which you may spend to upgrade your vehicle (engine, brakes, turbo etc.). Only average if you play alone, but if you can gather some friends (up to 5 players) this game can be real fun.***Moto Roader is a futuristic racing game that allows up to five players to compete against each other. Players use the cash earned when they win a race to power up their machine. Not only can they change the "TIRE" and "BODY" of their vehicles, but they also can add "SPECIAL" parts. Jump over tall obstacles with a "HOPPER" and blast past rivals at incredible speeds with "NITRO." What multiplayer game would be complete without attack items? Use a forward-launching "GRENADE" or a backward-dropping "BOMBER" to blow up and knock away rivals. Outmaneuver rivals in all eight heats to become the champion. labelimagesubject
F-1 Pilot: You're King of Kings Pack-In-Video1989Bad car controls and an overall very average presentation are making this a below average racing game. labelimageminimize
Final Lap Twin  Namco1989

[1]***A unique racing game, mainly because of it's additional RPG-stlye "quest mode". Your father gives you a racing car and wants you to become the world champion. So you make your way to different towns and buy better parts for your car. You earn money by beating other drivers in a short one lap race on one of several different course designs. Those drivers appear as random encounters while walking on the overworld. NPCs with hints to secret extra parts are also found in towns. Just like in normal RPGs. The concept reminded me a lot of "[game=#10943]World Court Tennis[/game]". There is another pure racing mode with formula 1 cars on where you start from position 26 and have to come under the first six to qualify for the next race and course. The racing action itself is pretty mediocre in both play modes. Good controls and no slowdown, but rather boring courses.

F-1 Dream NEC Avenue1989On first glance this game has everything a motivating racing game should have. You must win private races against opponents and bet money on your success. When you are successful you can join a F-3000 and later a F-1 team and race on real racing tracks. Prize money can be spent on better mechanics and parts for your car. There are lots of different racing tracks, pit stops and so on. But in the end the game fails somehow due to the controls and perspective. You will find it difficult to anticipate the race track because you can't see much ahead of your car, resulting in unexpected sharp bends and you losing valuable time (at least during the F-x races you have a little mini-map on the screen). The opponents are very hard to beat from the very beginning, which results in early frustration. labelimageminimize
Bari Bari Densetsu  Taito1989Generic motorbike racing game. It's based on some popular Japanese manga series, but except some illustrative b&w graphics in the intro and at the end there is no hint that this is based on something. No story at all. There are two play modes. A free travel mode, which is a kind of practice mode that let's choose on which of the sixteen tracks you want to race. And a world championship mode, where you race on all tracks and try to get the most points and thus becoming world champion. Between the races you can modify your bike setup a bit (using rain tires when the weather forecast expects rain for example). The racing itself is very mediocre and too easy once you find a fast setup. Graphics are weak, only a couple of different background graphics, simple objects along the track, no up- and downhill, no tunnels or other things that could break the monotony. Last but not least an annoying motor sound. labelimageminimize
F1 Triple Battle  Human1989
[52]***The special thing about "Triple Battle" is the fact that up to three players can compete against each other via a split screen mode. But that also means that you only have a mini view of 1/3 of the screen even when you are racing alone, which in my eyes - together with the clumsiness of the racing car and unspectacular graphics - breaks this game.
